As the reigning Miss UTOPIA SF 2001-02, I am most humbled and privileged to be a part of many activities associated with not only our UTOPIA Hawai‘i, but also UTOPIA San Francisco as well. I have been fortunate to attend several functions in the capacity of Miss UTOPIA SF, including one of the Miss Sämoa pageants that was held in the Bay area.
I also look forward to being a part of the UTOPIA SF representation on Tonga Day, to be held in San Francisco. This day honors the Tongan community residing in America. His Majesty, King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV will be in attendance of the festivities to include songs, dances and food of the Friendly Island Kingdom. This event promises to be one not to be missed. Mou laka mai ke vave, me‘a mai a si‘i kainga Tonga ke tau kalanga fiefia ‘i Fonua Lahi, ‘a ia ‘e fai ki he ‘aho 22 o e mahina ni.
Immediately following Tonga Day on the 22nd will be the premiere of the film Ke Kulana He Mähü at the Herbst Theater in the heart of San Francisco. It promises to have the greatest turnout yet for a film that comes from the most isolated islands in the Pacific, my home of Hawai‘i. The film endeavors to say to our entire community here in the islands and on the continent that there are other ways to reconcile sexuality, colonization and the detrimental changes our indigenous communities continue to endure at the mercy of capitalist society. There is indeed a place for all of our community regardless of sexual orientation and preference.
The film was produced by Zang Pictures and they can be found at www.Zangpictures.net for further information on this and other documentaries available for purchase. The proceeds will go to further the efforts of Asian and Pacific Islander communities in establishing cultural equity and parity. The film has personally been a pinnacle of my activities this past year, and I sincerely hope as one of the participants in the film that it will be as empowering for any of you who will view it as it was for those of us in it.
UTOPIA SF has been instrumental in part of the collaboration with the Asian Pacific American Health Forum and Zang Pictures to bring this film to the general public. Mahalo a nui loa iä ‘oukou äpau kä i kokua a paipai i kä mäkou papahana këia, ‘o ia ho‘i ‘o ka ho‘o‘akoakoa ‘ana mai iä käkou i ho‘okahi mana‘o, i ho‘okahi pu‘uwai.
Finally in this update, I am most appreciative and humbled to be invited once more to participate in the Gay Pride festivities immediately following the film all the way up to the end of June. The events and activities in the days to come will culminate with Pride Parade to be held on June 28th. Until next time gang, ke Akua pü, ä hui hou, aloha!
