Aloha UTOPIA members,
On
November 2nd, Ni, Kaui, Jaimie and I attended a weekend retreat in
Maui sponsored by the Maui AIDS Foundation and the Nat’l Native American AIDS
Prevention Center. We were chosen by
the Fono to represent UTOPIA Hawai‘i at this retreat. My experience at Ke‘anae was one that I will never forget even
though it lasted but a day. From the
time that we arrived at the campsite to the time we left, the feeling of
fellowship and friendship was everywhere.
Old friends were seen once more and new friendships were created.
Tui Silva
headed the workshop that I attended. It
allowed me to spend time to get to know others within our community, to listen
and learn from their own life experiences and how they are dealing with being
either gay or transgendered and Polynesian.
The closing of the retreat was very tearful, yet thought provoking, as
Hinalei Wong reminded us that we must be content with ourselves, always
remember others who have had a positive impact on our lives, and know that with
others by our side, we grow stronger.
This
was my first retreat and will not be my last as I am anxious to see the
exciting things that other Foundations and UTOPIA have planned for future
retreats.
